The History of Orange County, California

The area now known as Orange County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Tongva and Acjachemen (Juaneno) peoples. They lived in the region for thousands of years before European explorers and settlers arrived. In the late 18th century, Spanish explorers led by Gaspar de PortolĂ  reached the area. They established missions in California, including Mission San Juan Capistrano, which was founded in 1776. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Orange County became part of Mexico. Following the Mexican-American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 transferred control of California to the United States. California became a state in 1850, and Orange County was established in 1889.
